Perungudi is located in the south of Chennai, around 15 kilometers from the city center, near the coast of the Bay of Bengal . The East Coast Road , which runs south from Chennai along the coast, and the parallel Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road) run through Sholinganallur . The so-called “IT corridor”, on which numerous information technology companies have settled, extends along Rajiv Gandhi Road . Perungudi is connected to the center of Chennais by the MRTS elevated railway . In addition to the actual Perungudi district, the Perungudi zone includes a number of neighboring districts. The expansion of Chennai has made most of the area urbanized. With the Pallikaranai swamp, the Perungudi zone is also home to the remains of a once extensive wetland area, even if only about a tenth of what was once 5000 hectares is left.

Until 2011, Perungudi was a town panchayat in the Kanchipuram district with a population of 12,505 (2001 census) and administered according to the Panchayat system . But the place had long since grown together with Chennai and became part of the Chennai agglomeration . With the expansion of Chennai, Perungudi was also incorporated into Chennai administratively. The new Perungudi zone was formed from the former municipality of Perungudi and the also incorporated cities of Pallikaranai and Ullagaram-Puzhitivakkam and the villages of Kottivakkam , Palavakkam , Jalladiampet and Madipakkam .
