history

The East Coast Road was created in 1998 by linking several small roads that led through fishing villages along the Bay of Bengal. In 2000, the government hired the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company to improve and maintain the road. In the following year, some measures to increase safety were carried out, including the construction of paved verges and the straightening of dangerous curves. In 2002 the ECR became liable for the toll.
