The Dargah of Nagore

In Nagore is the Dargah ("holy tomb ") of Sufi saint Syed Shahul Hamid Qadir Vali (also known as Nagore Andavar, "Lord of Nagore"). According to tradition, he was born in 1491 as a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohammed in what is now the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. He is said to have been initiated into mystical Islam in Gwalior and then went on a wandering with a group of students. He is said to have performed numerous miracles. After visiting Afghanistan , Balochistan and Mecca , he moved to southern India. Allegedly through his blessing he fulfilled the wish of the Nayak King of Thanjavur to have children , whereupon he is said to have given him a piece of land in Nagore. Here he is said to have spent the last 28 years of his life until his death in 1558.

The Nagore Dargah is the most important Islamic pilgrimage site in Tamil Nadu. It houses the grave of Syed Shahul Hamid Qadir Valis as well as his son Syed Mohamed Yoosuf Sahib and his wife Syed Sultan Beebi Amma Sahiba. The tomb is crowned by a dome and flanked by five towering minarets . The Dargah of Nagore is considered to be miraculous and is therefore visited by numerous pilgrims, including many Hindus . Every year in the Islamic month of Jumada l-akhira, the two-week Kandoori festival takes place in memory of the saint . In Singapore , Tamil Muslims built a replica of the Nagore Dargah in 1828.
