The Puzhal Lake ( English Puzhal Lake, Tamil : புழல் ஏரி Puḻal Ēri [ ˈpuɻəl ˈjeːɾi ]) or Red Hills Lake (English Red Hills Lake, Tamil: செங்குன்ற ஏரி Ceṅkuṉṟa Ēri [ ˈseŋɡundrə ˈjeːɾi ]) is an artificial lake near Chennai ( Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

Lake Puzhal is located in the Taluk Ponneri of the Tiruvallur district, directly northwest of Chennai, around eleven kilometers from the city center. In the east and south, the Chennaier zones Madhavaram and Ambattur border the banks of Lake Puzhal. The lake takes its name from the location of Puzhal on the east bank.

Lake Puzhal was created as a water reservoir between 1868 and 1872 . Its capacity is around 93 million cubic meters . Together with three other water reservoirs, Lake Chembarambakkam , Lake Poondi and Lake Cholavaram , it takes over most of the city's drinking water supply. Lake Puzhal is fed by Lake Cholavaram, which in turn is connected to the Korttalaiyar River by a canal . This periodic flow only carries significant amounts of water during the northeast monsoon between October and December, so there is a need to store the water masses.
