Poonamallee ( Tamil : பூந்தமல்லி Pūntamalli [ puːn̪d̪əmalːi ]) is a city in the suburb area of Chennai (Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 57,000 (2011 census).
Poonamallee is located around 20 kilometers west of the city center of Chennai in the Tiruvallur district and is part of the Chennai metropolitan area . The city is the capital of the talk Poonamallee . The township of Poonamallee covers an area of 25.55 square kilometers.
Poonamallee is easy to reach by road from Chennai: The main Chennais arterial road to the west, EVR Periyar Salai (formerly Poonamallee High Road) leads towards Poonamallee. The national highway NH 4 from Chennai via Bangalore to Mumbai follows the route of the arterial road. The city center of Poonamallee is bypassed by a bypass road. With the southern areas of Chennais Poonamallee is connected by the Mount-Poonamallee-Road . The nearest train station is in Avadi nine kilometers north.
76 percent of the population of Poonamallee are Hindus , 13 percent are Muslims and 9 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 81 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 8 percent speak Telugu , 7 percent Urdu , 2 percent Malayalam and 1 percent Hindi .
