Avadi ( Tamil : ஆவடி Āvaṭi [ ˈaːʋəɖi ]) is an industrial city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu with just under 350,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is located in the Tiruvallur district around 15 kilometers west of Chennai and belongs to the Chennai metropolitan area . The name Avadi is an acronym for Armored Vehicles and Ammunition Depot of India .

Avadi is one of the most important locations for the Indian state arms industry. The Avadi Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) is the only production site for tanks in India. On December 29, 1965, the first Indian Vijayanta tank rolled off the production line here . Today the Arjun main battle tank and heavy artillery are built in Avadi. The Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has its headquarters in the city. In addition, the Indian army operates a vehicle depot, the air force a training camp for vehicle technicians in Avadi. There are also several civil industrial operations (metal processing, electrical engineering).

84 percent of Avadi's residents are Hindus , 11 percent Christian and 4 percent Muslim . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 75 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 14 percent speak Telugu , 5 percent Malayalam and 6 percent other languages.
