The attack on the Tbilisi-Agdam bus is an attack on August 10, 1990 by two Armenian terrorists on a passenger bus that was on its way from the Georgian capital Tbilisi to the Azerbaijani city of Agdam .

Escalation of the situation and number of victims

As the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated in the late 1980s, armed members of Armenian underground organizations began to target public transport on Azerbaijani territory (including passenger buses). As early as September 1989, a bus from Tbilisi to Baku was blown up. Five people were killed and 25 others injured. On July 11, 1990, 14 Azerbaijanis fell victim to an attack on the bus trip from Tərtər to Kəlbəcər .

The attack on the bus from Tbilisi to Agdam is considered to be one of the worst and most casualty attacks before the active fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan began in Nagorno-Karabakh in 1992. The bus that left Tbilisi for Agdam on August 10 had a total of 60 passengers. Not far from the city of Göygöl (then Xanlar ) there was a violent detonation of explosives that killed 15 to 20 people. The number of injuries ranged from 16 to 30 people.

Organizers

The Armenian underground organization " Wresch ", active in Rostov-on-Don , Russia , is suspected to be the main mastermind behind the explosion. According to the investigation, this group was also responsible for the fatal attack on the passenger bus from Tbilisi to Baku in September 1989.

The two Armenians, Armen Michailowitsch Awanesjan and Michail Michailowitsch Tatewosjan, were identified and arrested as immediate perpetrators. After a lawsuit, Awanesjan was sentenced to death and executed in May 1992; Tatevosyan was sentenced to 15 years in prison. But he was soon exchanged for Azerbaijani hostages in the city of Tərtər . The investigations also revealed that both assassins had tried unsuccessfully to blow up a passenger bus from Agdam to Tbilisi in June 1991.
