In an attack on Jolo Cathedral in the city of Jolo in the Philippine province of Sulu , two bombs detonated in quick succession on January 27, 2019. At least 20 people were killed and 111 others injured, including soldiers guarding the cathedral. The army is assuming an Islamist terrorist attack. The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) claimed the attack for itself.

The Islamist terrorist organization Abu Sayyaf is active on the island of Jolo and has drawn attention to itself through years of bomb attacks, kidnappings and beheadings. Muslims make up 10% of the population and various Islamic terrorist groups are trying to divide the Philippines with Islamic autonomous regions in the south, sometimes by force.

Two bombs were used in the attack. The first bomb exploded around 8:45 am local time during mass in the Cathedral of Our Lady on Mount Carmel , and the second exploded in the parking lot in front of the church when security forces arrived, said Gerry Besana, regional military spokesman. Filipino authorities assume an Islamist terrorist attack . The IS -known for the attack. 20 people died and 111 others were injured. Five soldiers who guarded the church were among the dead. 16 police officers and soldiers were injured.

Reactions

Delfin Lorenzana , Defense Minister in the Philippines, criticized the attack. Churches and other public institutions are given special protection.
