Schweikertsreuth residence

Chapel of the residence

The Schweikertsreuth residence was in what is now the Schweigertsreith district of the Maria Schmolln community in the Braunau am Inn district .

The castle is mentioned in the land register of Friedburg from 1363 as sicz Sweykkersrewt of Hanns Sweykkersrewtter . A Hanns Schweikertsrewtter on Schweikersreut is mentioned in 1503 . After this family died out, the seat came to the Counts of Tattenbach-Rheinstein as a Bavarian knightly fief under Elector Max Emanuel in 1691. In 1848 the heirs of the Baron von Handel owned the property and subsequently sold it to peasant hands. The castle that was converted into a farmhouse no longer exists today.

The little town is important today because of the Innviertler Zeche Schweigertsreith, which maintains old Innviertel traditions (country dancing, band dancing, erecting the maypole, walking around the Maschkerer).
