António Barbosa Bacelar

António Barbosa Bacelar (* 1610 in Lisbon , Portugal ; † 1663 ibid) was a Portuguese lawyer and writer. He held high legal offices and was mainly active as a historian and poet. It belongs to the baroque era of Portuguese literature .

Life

António Barbosa Bacelar was born into a wealthy family. He spent his school days at the Colégio de Santo Antão and then studied law in Coimbra , where he also received his doctorate in civil law . He then worked in high legal offices, such as judge and court president, especially in Castelo Branco , Évora , Porto and Lisbon.

Probably as a compensation for his legal work he was active as a writer. Numerous historical and cultural writings as well as poetic works were created. While his historical and cultural treatises appeared as independent books, he published his poetry exclusively in the well-known anthology Fênix Renascida .

His most famous poems are A morte de uma dama and A umas saudades .
