features

The bees are 13 to 14 millimeters long. The female has a shiny, indistinct, coarse, point-like structured labrum . The cheeks are slightly longer than the antennae and are therefore very long. The female comes in two color forms. In the first, the head, thorax and the first and usually also the second tergite are hairy black, the hair on the third to sixth tergite is red. The splint brush (Scopa) is black. In the second color variant, the face and the underside of the body are hairy whitish, the upper side of the thorax and the first four tergites are red-brown to gray-brownish, the fifth tergite is black. The scopa is whitish. The males look similar to the second color variant of the females, but the tergites three to seven are hairy black. The face has a whitish mark. The seventh tergite is provided with two widely spaced teeth at the end. The heel phalanx (metatarsus) on the hind legs is narrowed at the front edge towards the end.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in southern and central Europe. It flies from early May to early August. The females build their nests in the flat ground, on steep walls made of loess, edges of moraine or in the brittle mortar of walls. With the excavated earth a tube is built at the nest entrance. Its material is later mined to close the nest. Pollen is collected from different plant families. Cuckoo bees of the species are Coelioxys conica , Coelioxys rufescens , Melecta albifrons , Melecta luctuosa and Thyreus orbatus .
