Anti Freud. Psychoanalysis is demystified (in the French original: Le crépuscule d'une idole. L 'affabulation freudienne ) is a biographical non-fiction book published in 2010 by the French philosopher Michel Onfray . It takes a critical position on the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud . The main thesis of the author is that Freud was not a scientist but a philosopher. The work was first published in German-speaking countries in 2011 by Knaus Verlag .

background

Onfray spent four years of his childhood in a Salesian orphanage . There he experienced abuses and mistreatment by the monks. In overcoming this “ abyss of shame and shame ”, the Communist Manifesto , Friedrich Nietzsche's Antichrist and Freud's Three Treatises on Sexual Theory helped him, according to his own statements . Onfray later read Freud's entire work within two years. After he had also studied the entire Nietzschean work, Freud was “disenchanted” for him.

content

The work is divided into five parts. The first part, Symptomatology , is devoted to Freud's philosophical views and intellectual theft from Freud's side to Friedrich Nietzsche . In addition, Onfray questions Freud's conception of the insults of humanity as he classifies Freud's importance in the history of science as less than Copernicus ' and Darwin's .

The second part, Genealogy , deals with Freud's family history and its role as a factor in his theories of the Oedipus complex and parricide . Freud's relationships with his mother and daughter are of central importance .

In the third part, Methodology , Onfray investigates Freud's medical aberrations such as cocaine or electrotherapy . Freud's desire for social and medical recognition is also dealt with.

The fourth part, Thaumaturgy, is devoted, among other things, to the concrete emergence of psychoanalysis, which Onfray in the chapter Freud is not the inventor of psychoanalysis attributes to the sophist Antiphon of Athens .

The last part, Ideology , deals with Freud's relationship with dictators of his time, such as Mussolini . In addition, Freudian misogyny and homophobia as well as Freud's view of masturbation are treated as further topics .

criticism

Gudrun Mangold wrote on April 25, 2011 for the Tagesspiegel : “On the 544 pages of his Freud analysis, he confirms [Onfray] statement by statement with quotations from letters and other writings. His conclusions are bold, but they don't have to be wrong. And it doesn't affect them in any way that the author makes his audience laugh with his exaggerations. For example, when he presents the paradox that Freud wanted to develop a method that is valid for all of humanity - except for himself. "
