Ancient science and its reception (AKAN for short) is a scientific series that publishes writings on ancient science and medicine from an interdisciplinary perspective. It was founded in 1988 and has been published annually since 1992. Its editors are Jochen Althoff , Bernhard Herzhoff and Georg Wöhrle .

history

In order to bring together research from numerous disciplines such as classical philology, oriental studies, the history of science and philosophy, the Working Group on Ancient Science and Its Reception (AKAN) was founded in Bamberg in 1988 . He set himself the goal of inviting interested parties from home and abroad to lectures and to discuss research results in annual symposia . The first symposium took place in 1989. In 1990 the working group decided to publish its results in an annual series. Volumes I to IV from 1990-94 were published by Collibri-Verlag in Bamberg.

In 1994, with Georg Wöhrle's departure from Bamberg, the working group moved its headquarters to Trier , where Wöhrle accepted the chair for Greek studies . Since then, the volumes in the series have been published by Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier . In 1999, Jochen Althoff replaced the Bamberg classical philologist Klaus Döring as co-editor.
