Antiochus Gabinius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antiochus Gabinius was a Roman painter who worked in the 1st century BC. Was active in Rome .

He is known from the 18th letter of the fourth book of the extant collection of letters from the speaker Cicero to Atticus , in which he is listed as a freedman and official ( accensus ) of the Roman politician Aulus Gabinius . Since manuscripts that differ from the letter have survived, further biographical details are considered uncertain. Antiochus probably came from Syria and possibly he was a student of the respected portrait painter Sopolis , who was still around 54 BC. Maintained a painting school in Rome. It is unclear whether he was still active at the time the letter was written. Nothing is known of the work of Antiochus Gabinius.

Remarks

  1. Cicero, Epistulae ad Atticum 4, 18 .
  2. The manuscripts vary between solidis pectoribus ( something like "of a strong spirit") and e Sopolidis pictoribus (about "[pupil] of the painter Sopolis").
