The Antofalla is a 6409 meter high stratovolcano in the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina . The volcano is the third highest of the still active volcanoes on earth. It is located on the edge of the Puna de Atacama, a high plateau in the east of the Atacama Desert . At the top of the volcano there are ruins from the Inca period, the closest settlement is the village of Antofalla with 45 inhabitants (as of 2001). The name "Antofalla" comes from the almost extinct Chilean idiom Kunza and means: place where the sun dies.
