Antoine Buyse

Antoine Christian Buyse (born June 16, 1977 in The Hague ) is a Dutch law scholar and professor at the University of Utrecht .

Life

From 1995 on, Buyse studied history at the University of Leiden , majoring in the history of modern times and the history of science. In 2001 he finished his studies with a master’s degree and went on to study law . Here his focus was on international law and human rights law. After completing this course, Buyse received his doctorate in law in 2008 under the supervision of Rick Lawson , whose research assistant he was, with a thesis on the human rights situation in Europe, with a particular focus on Bosnia-Herzegovina. Buyse has been teaching at the University of Utrecht since 2007, initially as a lecturer, from 2007 as a junior professor and from 2010 as an associate professor. Since 2014 he has been a full professor at the Utrecht Chair for Human Rights and Director of the Dutch Institute for Human Rights (SIM).

Buyse's research area is human rights, in particular the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights . He also examines the human rights situation in (post) conflict situations and in transitional justice . Recently his research area has expanded to include the human rights situation with refugees and asylum seekers.
