Antoine Salvanh (also: Salvahn, Salvainh, Salvant and Salvart ) (* around 1478 in Vabrette , Ayssènes ; † 1552 ) was a French stonemason .

Live and act

Salvanh came from the small hamlet of Vernet in the later municipality of Ayssènes in the canton of Saint-Rome-de-Tarn .

From 1513 to 1551, Salvanh was foreman at Rodez Cathedral . He stated that at the time he started work on the cathedral he was around 35 years old and lived in Ruthene (Rodez).

“Magister Anthonius Salvanh lapicida et magister operarum fabrice ecclesie Ruthene; habitator pro nunc Ruthene; etatis, prout dixit, triqinta quinque annorum seu circa; … ”

“Master Anthonius Salvanh Steinmetz and head master of the Ruthene Church; currently residing in Ruthene; is, as he says, about 35 years; "

In 1514 he received an annual salary of 120 livres as the architect of the cathedral and the bell tower of Rodez, which was granted to him in addition to his expenses and for the maintenance of a horse. He oversaw an average of 100 to 120 workers, sculptors and stonemasons. They received a fixed monthly wage as well as free board and lodging from the bishop. The total expenditure was around five thousand livres annually. In addition, he and Guillaume Desmazes built the portal and rose window of St. Jean-Baptiste in Espalion from 1508. In the years 1521 to 1524 he built the portal of Saint-Côme near Espalion .

In Espalion he married Flore (nee de Beaulieu), the daughter of Guy de Beaulieu, in January 1516. Later there was a dispute with his brother-in-law Thomas de Beaulieu over his wife Flore's dowry. Eventually they agreed that the dowry would be set at 160 livres . His son was the stonemason Jean Salvanh , who continued his work on the cathedral from 1552.
