Antonio José Ponte

Antonio José Ponte Mirabal (* 1964 in Matanzas , Cuba ) is an engineer, professor of literature, screenwriter and writer.

He has been a writer since childhood. Before he devoted himself entirely to literature, he studied hydraulic engineering at the University of Havana and then worked in the profession for five years. Since the 1980s, first poems and later also essays Pontes were published by state publishers, in the 1990s he was awarded two literary prizes. As a prominent writer, he was exceptional in that he was publicly critical of Fidel Castro's government . Nevertheless, at times he had the opportunity to accept travel invitations to book fairs and readings abroad and to publish his works in Latin America, Europe and the USA. A few months after the publication of his critical volume of essays El libro perdido de los origenistas in Mexico, almost all of which had previously been published in Cuba, he broke with the state authorities: in 2003, the Cuban state association of artists and writers repealed his membership, after which he was denied further trips for several years. Since 2006 he has been living in exile in Madrid. Shortly before his departure, which was finally approved, he had taken part in the government-critical documentary Havanna - The new art of building ruins by the German author Florian Borchmeyer.

Ponte was the editor of the exile magazine Encuentro de la cultura cubana and is now vice director of the online magazine Diario de Cuba . Since 1997 he has published essays, poems and stories on a regular basis. In 2008 his story The Ruin Guardian of Havana was published in German translation.
