Antonite Monastery Akkon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Antonite Monastery was a branch of the Antonite Order in Acre in what is now Israel at the time of the Kingdom of Jerusalem .

history

The exact founding date of the Antonite convent with the associated hospital is not known. According to the Pelgrinages et Pardouns de Acre (1258–64), a pilgrim visit to the establishment resulted in three years and 40 days of indulgence . The monastery appears several times in the sources in connection with the estates and properties bequeathed to the convent in the city. From around 1300 the order also had a branch in Famagusta . With the fall of Acon in 1291, the monastery and hospital of St. Anthony may have come to an end.

Construction and plant

St. Antonius was located in the immediate vicinity of the Akkoner Antoniustore in the suburb of Montmusard. After the Muslim troops broke through, the heaviest fighting took place here. The buildings of the monastery can no longer be reconstructed because of the destruction after the city was conquered.
