Antonius Chapel (Nunkirchen)
The Antoniuskapelle is a small prayer room in the town of Wadern . It is in the Nunkirchen district on a side street in the center of the village. The chapel dedicated to St. Anthony is protected as an architectural monument.
history
The Antoniuskapelle was founded between 1908 and 1915 at the instigation of the brothers Johann and Franz Meyers, the owners of a sawmill in Nunkirchen. The exact construction dates have not been handed down. Johann Meyer had five children, including a daughter named Antonia. Tradition has it that the father of the family used the recovery of his daughter from a serious illness as an opportunity to build the chapel.
In 1991 the chapel, which was clearly marked by signs of deterioration, was renovated. The old stones were broken off, cleaned and used again as runners in the inner field in 1991 . The remaining parts of the building were almost completely rebuilt. The project was financed by private donations and the proceeds from local festivities. A peace bell was hung in the chapel.
building
The chapel is a rather small brick building covered with slate. The side turret with a pointed slate roof is adorned with a metal cross, the entrance portal is crowned with a massive cross made of pink sandstone. The white plastered interior is illuminated by two round windows on the side and another round window at the front of the chapel.
inner space
The interior is furnished with wooden benches. The altar-like free-floating shelf on the head side is equipped with various figures of saints, including an Antoius figure, a statue of Joseph and a statue of Mary.
