Antville is one of the first free European hosting systems for blogs . It is a simple content management system based on the Helma Object Publisher , a web application framework written in Java . The first Antville installation (antville.org) is one of the first weblog communities in German-speaking countries.

history

In 2001, the two programmers Robert Gaggl and Hannes Wallnöfer started to write a weblog system based on the Java framework Helma Object Publisher , based on the model of the leading weblog hosting platform Blogger.com at the time. They named the project Antville and registered the domain antville.org, under which a test server should run.

The first rough version of the software was completed on June 18, 2001, and two weeks later the first weblog started on antville.org as a test platform. At the same time, Tobi Schäfer completed the development trio.

The first version of Antville offered users simple CMS functions: publishing and managing texts, images and files, a comment function for registered users, and individual design of the site layout (via skins ). Operation takes place via a uniform user interface in the web browser , which Claudia Bogun (Art Director at ORF Online ) designed graphically.

Since at the beginning every user was allowed to create several weblogs free of charge on the test server, the test server quickly approached the limits of its performance. The developers therefore blocked the creation of new weblogs at 2,748 sites and approximately 12,000 registered users. However, new users were still allowed to register. In December 2002 the developers sent an appeal for donations to the users of antville.org, with the aim of raising 3,000 € for a new server (Antville Server Fund) . Despite the higher performance of the server purchased with this money, the restriction of not being able to create new weblogs was no longer lifted.

In December 2005, Knallgrau began to develop its own Antville version called twoday.net as a so-called fork .

Tobi Schäfer officially announced on January 17th, 2006 that he would be leaving the Antville development team.

In May 2007, however, Schäfer announced that he would like to work on a new version of the Antville software. Antville users were asked to convey their wishes to the developers. The "Antville Summer Of Code 2007" was implemented through donations.

Due to increasing problems with the donated server, the site antville.org was moved to a new server on February 14, 2009.

In order to relieve Tobi Schäfer as the only developer of the software and operator of antville.org, the association "antville - association for development, operation and support of free publishing software" was founded together with some users and was registered on August 11, 2009 in the register of associations Republic of Austria registered.

Since November 2, 2009, new weblogs can be opened on Antville: initially only on request, since spring 2011 possible again for every registered user.

From June 26, 2011 through mid-2015, Antville was hosted on Google Code . The source code is now on GitHub .
