Apache Directory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apache Directory is a project of the Apache Software Foundation that provides solutions for everything to do with directory services. Particularly relevant technologies in the project environment are LDAP and Kerberos ; Apache Directory offers free implementations in Java for both protocols under the Apache license .

The following sub-projects currently exist:

  • Apache Directory Server - an LDAP server implemented in Java
  • Apache Directory Studio - Eclipse- based tools for LDAP and directory services
  • Apache LDAP API - extended LDAP interface to replace the existing JNDI
  • Apache Mavibot - Multi Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) should be a replacement for the current JDBM backend
  • Apache SCIMple - Implementation of the SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) standard
  • Apache Fortress - A standards-based access management system
  • Apache Kerby - Kerberos protocol and KDC implementation

history

The origin of the project is a SourceForge project called LDAPd founded by Alex Karasulu in 2002, the aim of which was to implement an LDAP server in Java. In October 2003 the sources were taken over into the Incubator of the Apache Software Foundation, which they successfully left in 2005 as a new Apache project. Version 1.0 of the Apache Directory Server was released in October 2006. It was the first open source LDAP server to be certified as standard-compatible by the Open Group . Alex Karasulu is still involved in the project as an architect and developer, but has not been in charge of it since March 2007.
