Apache Directory Server or ApacheDS is an open source and free directory service server from the Apache Software Foundation and compatible with LDAPv3 .

history

In October 2002 Alex Karasulu started the LDAPd project at SourceForge.net . LDAPd was written in Java with the Avalon Framework and should be embeddable and compatible with the LDAP standard. In October 2003, Alex donated the source code to the Apache Software Foundation and was accepted into the Apache Incubator. In October 2004 the Apache Top Level Project Directory was set up after the successful incubation phase. This renamed LDAPd to Apache Directory Server. In October 2006 the LDAPv3 certified version 1.0 was published.

Original goals
