The Aparima River is a river in the Southland region in the south of New Zealand's South Island .

Its upper course is in the Takitimu Mountains , south of Lake Te Anau . It then flows south for about 100 km and flows into Foveaux Strait at the end of Oreti Beach near Riverton . To the north of Riverton, the river, together with the Porakino River, forms a basin that is only connected to the sea by a narrow passage. This is where New Zealand State Highway 99 crosses the river.

The Aparima is one of the two rivers that deposited the great alluvial plain known as the Southland Plains .
