Aphonopelma anitahoffmannae is a species of Mexican tarantula that was described in 2005. The species name was chosen in honor of the arachnologist Anita Hoffmann , who devoted herself to Mexican arachnids in her work. A male and a female of this tarantula species were discovered in Parque Ecológico Cuicuilco by the Mexican arachnologist Arturo Locht on June 30, 2000 and July 1, 2001.

features

The female has a dark brown to dark gray prosoma. The opisthosoma, the legs and the palms are dark brown in color and have longer, light brown to reddish hairs that give the spider a shaggy appearance. The males are similar in color to the females, but are more slender and appear less scruffy. The females are about four centimeters long (measured from the biting claws to the spinnerets), the males remain a little smaller with about three centimeters.

distribution

Aphonopelma anitahoffmannae occurs in Parque Ecológico Cuicuilco , south of Mexico City . This is an urban enclosed area that is exposed to environmental pollution from the surrounding civilization, such as air pollution and the changed lighting conditions caused by artificial lighting. The park is located at an altitude of 2300 meters above sea level. The average temperatures over the year are 15.5 ° C. From June to October there is a rainy phase, which is followed by a dry period in the months of November to May. There is an average of 880 mm of rain. The area is home to drought-resistant plants such as various types of grass, desert bushes and trees up to seven meters high.

Systematics

Based on the diagnostic analysis of the taxonomic characteristics of the female of this new Aphonopelma species, in particular the existence of irritable hair types I and III on the opisthosoma and the width of the receptaculum seminis , the species Aphonopelma albiceps was transferred back to the genus Brachypelma .
