Brachypelma albiceps is a burrowing species of tarantula in the genus Brachypelma that is found in central Mexico in an area around the cities of Mexico City , Cuernavaca, and Toluca .

features

This species of spider has a black basic color. The carapace is colored sulfur yellow and the opisthosoma has longer red hairs.

distribution

Distribution area
Juvenile female

Brachypelma albiceps is found only in Mexico. There the distribution area extends from the Federal District (Mexico City) to Morelos and probably also to northern Guerrero and northeastern Puebla . The distribution area does not overlap with that of other Brachypelma species.

behavior

The spiders dig 30 to 80 centimeters, sometimes angled and multi-chambered structures under tufts of grass, large branches, stones or rocks on cornfield slopes or along willow fences. The entrances to these tubes are very rarely lined with silk.

Systematics

Reginald Innes Pocock is considered the first to describe it . However, the female was described by FOP-Cambridge six years earlier . He thought it was the female of his species Eurypelma pallidum (today Aphonopema pallidum ), described in 1897 on the basis of a male . He described the female as one very much like the male. The opisthosoma, however, is brown and has isolated fiery red hairs. When describing a male as Brachypelma albiceps in 1903, Pocock referred to the incorrect description by Cambridge in the female.

The classification in the genus was uncertain for a short time. In 1995 it was placed in the genus Aphonopelma by Smith and then transferred back to Brachypelma in 2005 by the arachnologists A. Locht, F. Medina, R. Rojo and I. Vázquez . Markus Ruhnau brought some specimens of this type to Europe in 1996. The arachnologist Günter Schmidt did not recognize it as Brachypelma albiceps , but described it in 1997 as a new species of Brachypelmides ruhnaui . In the 2005 publication by A. Locht, this species was synonymous with B. albiceps .
