Apion rubiginosum is a beetle from the family of Brentidae , subfamily Apioninae that in the relationship of the weevil belongs.
features
The beetles are 2.5–3.2 mm long. Her red body is covered with short white hairs. In contrast to A. haematodes , when viewed from the side, the proboscis is almost straight, its underside only slightly angled at the base. The males 'proboscis and pronotum are about the same length, while the females' proboscis is relatively longer and more shiny than the males. The pronotum is hardly wider than it is long. In addition, the sides of the pronotum are approximately parallel. The wing covers show a slight dorsal flattening.

- Apion haematodes - curved trunk

distribution
The species is widespread in Europe. In the north, the occurrence extends to Fennoscandinavia and Central England and Wales . In the south the distribution area extends to North Africa, in the east to Central Asia .
Way of life
The beetles can be seen from April to October. They use the little sorrel ( Rumex acetosella ) as a host plant . The white beetle larvae develop in its roots and cause thickening, so-called plant galls . The pupation takes place within the roots.
