Apollodoros (medic)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apollodoros , Greek  Ἀπολλόδωρος , Latin Apollodorus (emphasis on the penultimate syllable), German Apollodor (emphasis on the last syllable), was a doctor and Iologist (poison researcher) in ancient Alexandria at the time of the first Ptolemy , i.e. around the last two decades of the 4th century BC . He is the author of a text Περὶ ἰοβόλων θηρίων = About the poison-releasing animals , and Περὶ θανασίμων φαρμάκων = About the deadly medicinal herbs . These works, which today are only available as fragments, were authoritative for the entire period that followed, they were translated into verse by Nikander and used directly or indirectly by almost all doctors and biologists who have written about poisons: Philinos , Andreas , Apollophanes , Herakleides of Taranto , Krateuas , Sostratus , Epainetus , Apollonios Mys , Straton , Archigenes of Apamea , Scribonius Largus , Celsus , Pliny and the later compilers. It is unclear whether it is the same Apollodorus who wrote a book about wine to Ptolemy.
