Apostolar of Enina

The Apostolar of Enina is an illuminated manuscript in Old Church Slavonic from the second half of the 11th century. It is the oldest known handwriting in Cyrillic script from Bulgaria . It contains the texts ( pericopes ) for the liturgical readings from the Acts of the Apostles and the letters of the New Testament on Saturdays and Sundays from the 35th Sunday after Pentecost to the Great Saturday (Holy Saturday) and for special celebrations from September 1st to October 3rd .

39 leaves have survived, mostly in poor condition, and a few other fragments. The text originally comprised around 215 to 220 sheets of 15.5 × 19.5 cm. It is provided with ornamental decorations and geometric patterns. Eighteen ornate initials have been preserved, two of them in Glagolitic letters .

The manuscript was found in 1960 during restoration work in the St. Paraskewa Church in the village of Enina in central Bulgaria. Today it is in the Bulgarian National Library of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Sofia .
