App.net was a web-based social network that operated from August 8, 2012 to March 14, 2017. The microblogging service allowed users to use up to 256 characters per message. The operators of App.net provided web access called Alpha, but asked their users to use third-party applications. Since February 25, 2013 it has been possible to get free, restricted access to App.net through a paying user. Users with free access could follow messages from up to 40 profiles.

The US magazine Time listed App.net as one of the top 50 websites in 2013.

In May 2014, the company announced that it would lay off all employees. On January 12, 2017, it was announced that the service will be discontinued on March 14, 2017.
