Alfredo Ellis Júnior

Alfredo Ellis Júnior (born June 6, 1896 in São Carlos , SP ; † June 13, 1974 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian historian , sociologist and essayist .

Life

Ellis Júnior was the fifth of six children of the doctor and coffee planter Alfredo Élis (also: Ellis, born March 19, 1850, † June 30, 1925), Senator of the State of São Paulo from 1903 to 1925, and his wife Sebastiana Eudóxia da Cunha Bueno (February 28, 1859 - March 20, 1929).

He studied law at the University of São Paulo (USP) and became a prosecutor . From 1925 to 1930 and from 1934 to 1937 he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo. In 1939 he became professor for the "History of Brazilian Civilization" at the Philosophical Faculty of the USP (Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo), of which he was director from 1939 to 1941. As a historian, he was particularly concerned with the history of São Paulo .

His honors included regular membership in the Academia Paulista de Letras , in which he held seat 18.

Ellis Júnior was married to Hilda Backheuser, with whom they had a daughter, Miriam Ellis (* 1922), who later also became a professor of Brazilian history at the University of São Paulo.
