Academia Paulista de Letras
The Academia Paulista de Letras ( APL ) is a literature and language academy founded in São Paulo in 1909 .
The founding statute was based on that of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (founded in 1897). It was founded on November 27, 1909 by 40 poets, writers, scientists and politicians, mostly from the state of São Paulo , under the leadership of Joaquim José de Carvalho . Today it is based in Largo do Arouche in the city center.
The first president was Brasílio Machado from 1909 to 1916 . More recently, the eighteenth president has been Antonio Penteado Mendonça since 2011, succeeding José Renato Nalini (as of 2012). Each academician keeps his seat, the cadeira, until the end of his life. The academy was also open to women writers from the start. The members are now also referred to as immortals, the Imortais.
Since its founding, the academy has developed into the second important association of writers, alongside the one in Rio Janeiro, which was important for the development of Saopaulic literature and language within the Brazilian literary history of the 20th century. The authors were instrumental in the development and expression of Modernismo brasileiro , the Latin American Modernismo , as opposed to European literature , and the realism associated with it , e.g. B. involved in the psychological urban novel and regionalismo brasileiro . According to its statutes, it focuses on literary life, dialect and the protection of the cultural values of the state of São Paulo.
