Júlio César Ribeiro Vaughan (born April 16, 1845 in Sabará , Minas Gerais , † November 1, 1890 in Santos ) was a Brazilian writer and grammarian .

Ribeiro created the flag of the state of São Paulo ( proposed as the national flag after the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888 ) and was the namesake of the 24th seat of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and the 17th seat of the Academia Paulista de Letras .

His Grammatica Portugueza , published in 1881, was the first attempt to grasp Brazilian Portuguese grammatically.

The naturalistic novel A carne , published in 1888, is considered to be his magnum opus . In it he represented taboo subjects typical of naturalism such as free love and anti-clericalism . The book was filmed in 1975 by J. Marreco as an erotic drama (relatively unsuccessful).

Ribeiro died of tuberculosis at the age of 45.
