Mauricio de Sousa
Mauricio Araújo de Sousa , (born October 27, 1935 in Santa Isabel ) is a Brazilian cartoonist and entrepreneur. De Sousa became Brazil’s best-known comic artist through the Turma da Mônica comic series , which was very popular in Brazil and created in 1959.
As the father of 10 children, he was often inspired by their experiences when creating his comics. He gave the names of two of his daughters to Mônica, his most famous cartoon character, and her friend Magali.
Translations of 'Turma da Mônica' (e.g. 'Mónica y su pandilla', 'Monica's Gang') appear in 14 languages in over 40 countries, mainly in Latin America, but also in Spain, Italy, Japan and the USA.
In September 2013 the Susanna Rieder Verlag published the German-language first edition of the children's comic classic 'Pelezinho' (translation by Lilli-Hannah Hoepner).
In São Paulo there was a theme park with its characters from 1993 to 2010 ( Parque da Mônica in the 'Shopping Eldorado'); Such parks also existed briefly in Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro .
Mauricio de Sousa has been a member of the Academia Paulista de Letras since May 2011 .
