Apparatus glass blower

The apparatus glass blowers , known in Germany as glass apparatus builders , produce laboratory accessories and sensors from glass .

They manufacture precision glass parts for research, medicine, pharmaceuticals and industry.

To do this, they process glass tubes, glass rods and various semi-finished products manually or by machine using hot and cold working, such as bending, narrowing, blowing, grinding and drilling. In hot processing, the glass is heated with the help of a burner until it is viscous and can be deformed.

Apprenticeship time and lessons

The three-year apprenticeship includes 840 vocational lessons. There are also 360 lessons of general education.

Requirements for learners

The requirements are a successfully completed secondary school (preferably at the advanced level), enjoyment of glass, craftsmanship, good sense of proportion, ability to concentrate, healthy airways and good motor skills.

Final apprenticeship examination (now called "qualification procedure")

In the qualification procedure, practical professional examination tasks as well as school examinations must be completed in oral and written form. Experience grades are included where possible.

Requirements for professional trainers

Vocational trainers require training as a glass blower or apparatus glass blower with two years of professional experience or an equivalent training with five years of professional experience in glass apparatus construction. A 40-hour vocational training course for vocational trainers is also required.
