data sheet

A data sheet ( English datasheet ) is issued by the manufacturer of a product and explains a developer who wants to installing the product or use as a component in its own product, the exact characteristics and uses of this product. In simple cases such information actually fits on a single sheet of paper, in more complex cases such as a microprocessor the size grows to a whole book.

Manufacturers often publish the collected data sheets for an entire product family in the form of data books.

Specific recommendations for use of the product enter the manufacturer either as a chapter in the data sheet or as a separate application note ( English application note ), in the latter case usually much detail as possible. In the electronics sector, it is explained here, for example, how a complete regulated power supply unit can be set up with a control circuit or an analog-digital converter can be set up with another .

Data sheets for electronic components

Data sheets for electronic components typically include the following information in their own subsections:

  • Manufacturer Name
  • Item number and full name
  • Illustration of the product, photo or drawing
  • special properties
  • brief functional description
  • Connection diagram (s) of the pins
  • absolute minimum and maximum limit values (supply voltage, power consumption, input currents, storage, soldering and operating temperatures, etc.)
  • Recommended operating conditions (again with absolute minimum and maximum values)
  • a table of DC data (with varying temperatures, supply voltages, input currents, etc.)
  • a table of AC data (with varying temperatures, supply voltages, frequencies, etc.)
  • Diagram (s) of input / output waveforms including timing definitions
  • Diagram (s) with the mechanical dimensions, with minimum / typical / maximum dimensions, including contact arrangement
  • Test circuit (s)
  • Explanations of the environments for which the product is approved, for example in highly secure nuclear technology systems
  • Explanations of the materials used, in particular according to the RoHS directive
  • Application recommendations such as required filter capacitors, PCB layout, etc.
  • Application recommendations for the circuit environment (see above in the application note)
  • List of the different available housing designs (with pictures) and performance variants and associated order numbers

Nowadays, manufacturers often offer data sheets freely accessible on the Internet, mostly as PDF .

Consumer electronics products usually have significantly less electrical information in the data sheet (mostly only input and output voltage and information on power consumption in watts).

Datasheets for other products

Datasheets are not limited to electronics. For example, there are corresponding documents on mechanical components or apparatus , cars ( example ), chemicals ( example ), infrared films , materials ( example ).
