Appropedia is a wiki that serves to jointly develop solutions in the areas of sustainability , poverty reduction and development cooperation. The focus is on adapted technology and the exchange of knowledge about specific projects. Appropedia is mainly used by people and organizations working in the field of sustainable development. It is also used in the service learning teaching method, e.g. B. in language teaching and engineering training.

MediaWiki is used as software . There are currently around 8500 items (as of August 2, 2020). Most of them are written in English.

Appropedia word cloud created from the 5,000 most popular pages.

The wiki’s vision is that all of humanity can work together to enable a full and sustainable life. Appropedia offers an infrastructure for this and helps to bring together different individuals and organizations. The exchange of knowledge should make it possible to fall back on previous attempts so that efforts and mistakes do not have to be repeated. Appropedia's motto is Sharing knowledge to build rich, sustainable lives (something like: exchanging knowledge in order to live fulfilled and sustainable).

Content

Appropedia is suitable for the following content, for example:

  • Projects (instructions, testimonials)
  • Best practices in sustainability and development
  • Pages for solving problems together
  • Information, tables, diagrams
  • Designs, photographs and illustrations
  • Links and information about organizations

Emergence

Appropedia was put online by Lonny Grafman in April 2006. He got help from Aaron Antrim, Gabriel Krause and later from Curt Beckmann. In December 2006, Appropedia merged with WikiGreen. As a result, the number of articles increased significantly. Among other things, the rights for many publications and content from CD3WD (CDs for the 3rd World) were transferred.

Later, content was imported from the following other sources:

  • Several pages from the International Rivers Network
  • Several pages from Demotech
  • Over 100 articles from Practical Action
  • In March 2007, the content of the Village Earth wiki was added to Appropedia
  • Also in March 2007, the content of the How To Live Wiki was added. The operator Vinay Gupta joined the Appropedia team.
  • In mid-2007 the Sgoals Wiki joined Appropedia
  • In January 2008 the Students for Global Sustainability Wiki was added
  • In April 2008 CCAT (Campus Center for Appropriate Technology) became a partner of Appropedia

The Semantic MediaWiki extension has been used since 2012 .
