Apsny ( Abkhazian Аҧсны ) is an Abkhaz newspaper. It has been published since February 1919, making it the oldest newspaper still in existence in the Abkhaz language .

history

The magazine was founded on February 27, 1919 and was the first Abkhaz language newspaper at that time. The first editor-in-chief was the writer Dmitri Gulia . Many other well-known Abkhazian intellectuals also wrote for the newspaper, including Samson Chanba .

From 1921 to 1991, when Abkhazia belonged to the Soviet Union, it was called "Apsny qapsch" (Аҧсны ҟаҧшь), which means "Red Abkhazia". In the 1970s, the circulation was around 13,800 per issue. The 20,000 issue went to press in February 2012. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the old name was returned.
