Aquafon ( Russian Аквафон / Akwafon , Abkhazian Аҟəафон / Aqwafon) is the largest mobile operator in Abkhazia .

Surname

The name Aquafon is an allusion to the Abkhazian name of the seaside capital Sukhumi : Aqwa (Аҟəа), as well as the Latin name for water, aqua.

history

Aquafon was founded on March 6th 2003 and started its services on July 13th of the same year. By April 2007 the number of subscribers grew to 50,000, by 2008 to 80,000. Aquafon launched its GPRS offer in summer 2008 and a UMTS network on September 30th .

Ownership

51% of Aquafon is owned by Mondeo Holdings, based in the British Virgin Islands . Mondeo Holdings is a 100% subsidiary of ComTel Eastern based in Bermuda . ComTel Eastern also holds shares in the Russian wireless operator MegaFon .

Competitor

Aquafon was a monopoly in the field of mobile communications in Abkhazia until the competitor A-Mobile started its services in 2006 .
