history

The first Rheda church was mentioned in 1088 and stood on today's Protestant Johannesfriedhof until it was demolished in 1818.

After the Second World War, the Catholic St. Clemens parish in Rheda grew noticeably. On a visit to the Confirmation in 1957 , Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger first addressed the construction of a new church. At the end of 1959 a church building association was founded for this purpose in order to find building sites and money. At the end of 1960, the association announced an architectural competition for the new building, which Gottfried Böhm from Cologne won in 1961.

After a suitable building site was found, the construction of a new kindergarten began in 1962. In September 1964, construction of the church finally began. The laying of the foundation stone was celebrated on May 2, 1965 . The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on October 22, 1965 . After completion of the shell, the interior decoration began. The bells were ceremonially inaugurated on Easter Monday 1966. On 1 October 1966, the new church by Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger was consecrated to be. At the same time, Rüdiger Hinz became the first vicar in St. Johannes. From the beginning there was structural damage to the church due to rainwater penetrating from the side. In 1986, the church had to be clad with titanium zinc sheets.

The actual establishment of the parish vicarie St. Johannes Baptist took place on July 1st, 1967. In addition to the building of the church, a complete parish center was also planned, but this was dropped for reasons of space and financial resources. At the beginning of the 1970s, only the rectory and parsonage were added.

On December 1, 1974, the Vicarie was raised to an independent parish.

Under the date of June 24, 2012, the parish of St. John was abolished by archbishop's decree on January 1, 2013 and reverted to the mother parish of St. Clemens.
