The Aquatunnel in Luxembourg City (towards Pfaffenthal)

The Aquatunnel (also Aqua-Tunnel ) in the city of Luxembourg connects the Petruss valley with the Pfaffenthal . It is 900 m long, 4.40 m wide, 3.25 m high and is on average 60 m below the ground in Luxembourg City. The temperature in the tunnel is 12 to 14 ° C all year round.

In the 1950s there was a collecting canal that carried the wastewater from the Merl , Belair and Zessingen area through the Petruss valley, Grund , Clausen and Pfaffenthal to Beggen . But it was too small to transport all the wastewater, so a solution had to be found. Since the old, 3,300 m long route partially ran under houses, expansion would have been difficult and too expensive. Therefore, a plan was devised for a new, straight canal under the city. Work began in July 1961, and almost two years later, in August 1963, the tunnel was completely blasted into the rock and the canal route laid. Also, the civil defense then showed interest in the tunnel as a bomb shelter to be expanded, which is also partly done (emergency lighting is still missing). The tunnel under the city also has a connection to the Luxembourg Fortress : there is an entrance to the old fountain of the Place d'Armes . Today school classes or private individuals can take part in guided tours through the tunnel.
