Geographical location

The aqueduct to which the aqueduct belongs begins at the Saint-Clément spring 14 kilometers away . The aqueduct runs through the Les Arceaux district of Montpellier.

Building

The two arcade floors of the aqueduct were modeled on the construction of the Pont du Gard . The aqueduct is 880 meters long and has a relatively constant maximum height of around 22 meters. The span of the upper, small arches is around 3 meters, that of the larger, lower arches around 9 meters. The building was designed by Henri Pitot , Donnat and Jean Antoine Giral .

history

Completed in 1772, the aqueduct brought water to the city, where it fed a water reservoir (French: Chateau d'eau ) near the triumphal arch. From there fountains and public water intake points were supplied. The fountains served were the Fontaine des Trois Graces on the Place de la Comedie , the Fontaine de Cybele on the Place Chabaneau and the Fontaine des Licornes on the Place de la Canourgue .
