Ar Re Yaouank is the name of a Breton music group founded in 1986 by two young brothers Fred and Jean-Charles Guichen . The two play the diatonic accordion and guitar . In 1987 Gaël Nicol ( Bombarde and bagpipes ), David Pasquet (Bombarde) and in 1990 Stéphane De Vito ( bass guitar ) joined them. The name of the group means in Breton "The Young" or "The Immature".

History of the group

Ar Re Yaouank successfully played traditional danceable pieces and his own compositions at concerts in Brittany and at Fest-noz , in Paris and at various festivals. In 1998 the group disbanded. Ar Re Yaouank's music shaped the fest-noz of the 90s and renewed traditional Breton dance music. Due to their modern way of playing, the Fest-noz became popular again in the 90s and excited a young audience for Breton music. Distinctive for their music is their “ rock ” - given by the bass playing and the electrical amplification, their rousing energy and their own sophisticated arrangements in traditional rhythm . Well-known and famous pieces are theAn-dro "MAL" or the Plinn "Ha dall ha dall daoned".

The time after Ar Re Yaouank

David Pasquet at the Bombarde

At Fest-Noz, the musicians who formerly made up the group regularly honor Ar Re Yaouank by dedicating pieces to her, more precisely to the traces she has left in contemporary Breton music. The ex-members continue to play in different formations today. The Guichen brothers have formed a quartet, two of which have already been released, that pick up on the traditions of Irish music. David Pasquet accompanied the singer Denez Prigent , one of the most famous voices in Brittany, before he founded his own group - the "David Pasquet Group". Gaël Nicol played in various formations, namely Bleizi Ruz , Añjel IK , Diwall and Felix Virgo .

On July 14, 2011, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Festival des Vieilles Charrues in Carhaix, there was a one-time reunion of Ar Re Yaouank.
