In the Arbeiter Zeitung , Max Kurz from Leipzig was looking for members for a swimming club via an advertisement. The association was founded on September 12, 1909 at Kreitnergasse 29 in Ottakring , the first chairman was Johann Swoboda , his deputy Franz Porsche. The swimming exercises were held in the Margaretenbad from November 2, 1909. As a natural swimming pool, Hahninsel bei Gänsehäufel was awarded to the association in 1910 and taken away again in 1911. The workers' beach opened in 1912 , and club members were involved in the construction. In 1913 the club offered its swimming exercises in the Wilhelminenbad in Ottakring.

In 1919 an athletics section was established. The Association of Workers 'and Soldiers' Sports Clubs in Austria was founded on the initiative of ASV members . In 1924 the ASV Vienna, the Vienna Workers' Gymnastics Association and the Working Group for Sport and Physical Culture in Austria (ASKÖ), formerly VAS, settled on the Margarethengürtel.

In the Amalienbad , which opened in 1926, and in the Jörgerbad, the club's championships took place around May 1, 1945. A handball game against North Vienna is mentioned in the chronicle in 1929. In February 1934 all workers' sports clubs were dissolved. The former ASV Vienna club members meet under the name Movement XVII in the Jörgerbad and in the Hernalser Sportschule.

In September 1945 club life was resumed and free swimming lessons were offered in the Margarethenbad. The completely destroyed workers beach was taken over by ASV Vienna. In December 1945, the club organized the first Vienna championships after the war in Margarethenbad.
