The Jörgerbad in the 17th district of Hernals is the oldest existing indoor pool in Vienna and the first indoor pool owned by the municipality of Vienna.

history

The Jörgerbad was built in a 20-month construction period as a bath, steam and indoor swimming pool, opened on May 22, 1914 by the Mayor of Vienna Richard Weiskirchner and subsequently run as the "Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Bad der Stadt Wien". The name “Jörgerbad”, after its address at Jörgerstrasse 42-44, was only given to the bath after the collapse of the Danube monarchy .

The construction was planned by Friedrich Jäckel (1876–1960), Heinrich Goldemund (1863–1947) and Franz Wejmola (technology). Not only is it the first municipal indoor swimming pool in Vienna, children were also taken into account for the first time in the construction of a swimming pool in Vienna, thanks to the construction of a separate children's pool. In addition, the gender segregation was largely abolished here for the first time, which enabled families to bathe together. The bath offered the 469 possible users of the men's steam bath, tub baths, air and sun baths and indoor swimming pool 274 changing facilities in the form of cubicles and boxes.

Architecturally remarkable is the glass roof of the swimming pool, which can be opened and reveals an area of 16 by 9 meters. Since the construction site was too small, the swimming pool could not be built in a length of 33 1/3 meters (3 lengths = 100 meters) suitable for swimming competitions.

Between 1968 and 1978 the Jörgerbad was technically and structurally renewed while maintaining the structural appearance and connected to the district heating network. The children's outdoor pool in the neighboring Pezzlpark, since 2019 Frederic-Morton-Park , was included in the Jörgerbad during this work, so that it now presents itself as a combined indoor and outdoor pool.

In addition to the indoor pool with outdoor area, the Jörgerbad also offers baths, shower baths, steam baths, sauna, water slide, massage, solarium, restaurant and sauna buffet.
