The Höfli in Stans

The Höfli , also known as Rosenburg , is a manor in Stans , whose origins go back to the 12th century. The building, along with the town hall and the Winkelriedhaus, is one of the most important secular buildings in the canton of Nidwalden .

history

The history of the building goes back to a residential tower of the noble Meier of the Benedictine abbey Murbach in the end of the 12th century. The Meyer von Stans officiated here as secular representatives of the church and took the due tithe from the monastic feudal people in Stans and the surrounding area.

During the Renaissance, the building was the glamorous home of the lavish Landammann Johannes Waser, later the baroque center of society around the splendid Landammann Nikolaus Keyser. In the 20th century, the building became a bourgeois «block of flats». The Renaissance parlor with the rich buffet and the painted tiled stove was sold.

The Höfli Foundation was established in 1969 and has owned the building ever since.

An extensive restoration of the building took place between 1977 and 1982. It was used by the Nidwalden Museum until 2014, the exhibition there showed the history of the house, the Stans villagescape and the consequences of the fire of 1713, the emergence of the state of Nidwalden, the " attack of the French " of 1798 and the history of the Stans residents in foreign military service . In November 2014 the Literaturhaus Zentralschweiz (lit.z) started operations in the Höfli.

The “Rosenburg” restaurant, which has been awarded 15 Gault Millau points for its cuisine, is located on the ground floor of the house . Rooms on the first floor are used for civil weddings. In the courtyard there is an economic building from 1856 in the form of a Gaden . Today it is known as Chäslager and is used for cultural events.
