The Nidwalden Museum in Stans has a collection of works of art as well as various cultural goods and objects relating to the history of the canton of Nidwalden . These include works of Swiss art from the 18th century to the present day.

The focus is on portrait , history and landscape paintings by artists from Central Switzerland as well as sacred art and votive paintings . These document the art and cultural history of the canton.

The basis of the museum is the collection, the maintenance of which is part of the house's task as a social educational mission. At three locations, Winkelriedhaus and pavilion, salt store , Fürigen Fortress , the Nidwalden Museum shows themed special exhibitions, solo exhibitions by artists and a selection of its holdings.

The salt store built at the beginning of the 18th century is the actual home of the museum. Centrally located at the valley station of the Stanserhorn cable car , a special exhibition on a cultural and historical topic is shown here every year from April to October. These included the exhibitions Of Summiteers and Porters - An Exhibition on the History of Tourism (2011), My Grandparents - Stories to Remember (2012), Spuk - Geister, Sagen, Goosebumps (2013) and Triichle and Teffli - Nidwalden Festival Customs in 2014 ).

Winkelriedhaus and pavilion

The Winkelriedhaus, a restored patrician house from the 16th century, has been used for the presentation of the collection of works of art from Central Switzerland since 2014. A tour designed in 2014 is intended to provide insights into the history of the house and insights into art from three centuries.

Nidwalden votive art is represented as well as portraits, histories and landscape paintings by Johann Melchior Wyrsch , Melchior Paul von Deschwanden or Josef Zelger. With the permanent exhibition, the museum also presents artifacts and archive materials from the estate of Annemarie von Matt that have never been exhibited, as well as works by contemporary artists such as Paul Lussi, Judith Albert , Heini and Barbara Gut as well as Jo Achermann .

In the pavilion opened in 2012, the Nidwalden Museum shows special exhibitions by contemporary artists who are often related to the canton or are of interest to the region because of their work. The museum showed solo exhibitions by Arnold Odermatt (2013) and Rochus Lussi (2014) , among others .

Fürigen fortress

Fürigen Fortress: engine room

In Stansstad , Fürigen Fortress with its original furnishings, mostly from the 1940s, is intended to give an impression of how the situation in Switzerland was assessed militarily from the Second World War to the end of the Cold War. 200 meters of tunnels, two cannon stands and historical documents give evidence of the fortress.
