Paul Stöckli
Paul Stöckli (born September 12, 1906 in Stans ; † December 26, 1991 ibid) was a Swiss painter and glass painter . He was a co-founder of the artist group Kreis 48 and is considered one of the exponents of Tachism .
life and work
Paul Stöckli came from a family of painters, gilders and restorers. First completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in his father's painting business, then attended the arts and crafts schools in Lucerne and Basel and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1927 to 1930 and in Paris from 1931 to 1934 (including at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière ). He worked in Stans from 1934 to 1937 and in Basel from 1937 to 1957. Paul Stöckli was one of the Basel gray painters and in 1948, together with Max Kämpf and Peter Moilliet, was one of the founders of the group "Kreis 48", an association of artist friends with no specific program. From 1950 onwards Paul Stöckli carried out a number of public commissions, especially for the design of churches. In 1957 he returned to Stans and from 1971 concentrated on freelance work.
Niklaus Oberholzer writes about the work of Paul Stöckli: "After dark figurative beginnings , partly based on the expressionistic style of Georges Rouault and partly reminiscent of Paula Modersohn-Becker , Paul Stöckli turned to non-representational painting close to Informel ." The most important works by Paul Stöckli in public spaces include the sacred concrete stained glass in the church Obergösgen (1954–1955) and in the church of St. Mauritius Oberengstringen (1965), as well as the construction of the abdication hall of the Eichbühl cemetery in 1965–1967 in Zurich, but also the design in the Viscosouisse canteen in Emmenbrücke (1962). In his late creative phase, he created collages from pieces of cardboard or paper fragments, as well as diary sheets , which Paul Stöckli designed on newspaper pages.
During his entire artistic career, Paul Stöckli occupied himself with etching . The early sheets show street, fair and carnival scenes, but also portraits. Later works become more free in color and form.
In 1986 Stöckli was awarded the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Lucerne .
