District 48

The circuit 48 was a Basel artist group in 1948 at the initiative of Max Fight formed.

The association was created u. a. for the purpose of joint exhibitions and to represent their interests, for example in the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt . The group was constituted on May 3, 1950 as an association with statutes. The first joint exhibitions took place in 1948 in the Beyeler Gallery and in 1950 in the Basler Kunsthalle . The presidents in the early days were: Dr. Frank Weiss (until 1953), 1953–65 Prof. Alfred Bühler, from 1965 Dr. Hans Ruedi Oeri.

The formation of District 48 can be seen as a reaction of younger painters and sculptors to the artist organizations Group 33 and the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects (GSMBA), which were dominant in Basel at the time . The Basel gray painters were strongly represented in District 48.

Artistically active members were: Heinrich Barth, Jean-François Comment , Romolo Esposito, Karl Glatt , Max Kämpf , Theo Lauritzen , Alex Maier, Peter Moilliet , Toni Rebholz, Julie Schätzle, Gustav Stettler, Paul Stöckli and Hans Weidmann . Valery Heussler , Hanni Salathé and Robert Lienhard joined them later . Lauritzen, Lienhard, Moilliet and Salathé were sculptors, all the other members were painters.

The artists' association was active for around 25 years, and in 1976 it was dissolved informally. The last joint exhibition took place in 1986.

In 2008 a commemorative exhibition took place in Moutier at the Musée Jurassien des Arts , in 2016 the Kunst Raum Riehen organized a retrospective, on which a monograph was published.
