Life

Peter Moilliet, son of the painter Louis Moilliet , came to Basel in 1937 after finishing school in Graubünden and completed an apprenticeship as a stone carver . In 1942 he worked briefly as an assistant to Karl Geiser and decided to train as a sculptor with Germaine Richier in Zurich , who trained budding artists. In her school he got to know the professional model Maria Vanz; they married in 1946. After 1945 he established himself as a freelance artist and settled in Allschwil near Basel, where he has lived and worked ever since. In 1948 he was one of the founders of Kreis 48 . His wife worked for sculptors such as Karl Geiser, Otto Charles Bänninger and Germaine Richier.

Moillliet, Willy Hege , August Suter , Ernst Suter , Louis Léon Weber , and Alexander Zschokke were invited to the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt competition entries for the grave of the lonely in the Hörnli cemetery in 1946 . Moilliet's reclining sculpture Pietà was awarded first prize.

Works

Peter Moilliet mainly worked figuratively and in stone. Modeled sculptures in plaster or bronze , drawings and sketches round off his work. Numerous free sculptures are in public space in north-western Switzerland. The Moilliet figures are kept in a style typical of him, which is characterized by reduced gestures and archaic composition of forms. The human body inspired Moilliet to do numerous works in the form of free-standing sculptures, reliefs or portrait busts. Representative examples are:

  • Pietà , reclining sculpture, 1946–1949, which adorns the grave of the lonely in the Basel cemetery on the Hörnli.
  • The four evangelist symbols , a monumental free sculpture made of Kirchheim shell limestone that was created for the same cemetery in 1961–1966.
  • Monument conservator Riggenbach , a life-size bronze sculpture on Leonhardskirchplatz in Basel.
  • Lorelei , 1952–1955, fountain in Margarethenpark in Basel.
  • People of Today , 1972, wall relief, Riehen parish hall
